Joy is the Why

When the music quits playing
Flowers stop swaying
The universe lets out a sigh

Someone is leaving
Hearts begin grieving
We never say goodby

For a heart leaves behind passion
A face leaves behind smiles

For those who are living
With the privilege of giving
The joy that we give is the why

When our music is playing
Our bodies are swaying
No one can say goodby

The Old Way

A text or a phone
Mail or a letter
I long for the way
That communicates better.

Look at a face
Hear words in the air
They stay in our memory
Where no one else cares

A touch of the hand
A smile on a face
Not just a picture
But feeling a place

To look into a soul
Of someone who's living
Adds deeper meaning
Removes all misgivings

The Caffè

The smell of coffee
books and pie
Sounds of laughter
and conversation
Spring jackets
laptops
Sipping
Smiling faces
rising steam
College students
Professors
Retired people
Lovers

Lets leave the bar
Its hazy view
blaring music
false affections
boisterous talk
and closings
We'll go to the caffè
in the morning
Bask in the glow of
beginnings and
hope
While we add
our dreams
